Kailey + Alex // A Tuscan Countryside Celebration

Kailey + Alex -- A Tuscan Countryside Wedding -- Whitney Justesen Photography-326.jpg

In October of 2019, I traveled to Italy to photograph a wedding in the beautiful Tuscan hills. I had been asked to cover the events as an associate shooter for the lovely and talented Safeena of Little Boat Photography, who was not able to make it to Italy for this wedding. I was already planning to be in Italy for a personal trip during that time, so I jumped at the opportunity to cover this destination wedding! I’ve always wanted to photograph a wedding in Italy, and this one was sure to be breathtaking.

I will forever be grateful I accepted this assignment. Kailey and Alex, a beautiful couple from Canada, put together the most intimate, relaxing, and gorgeously crafted weekend for their friends and loved ones. I got to know the family so quickly, and felt so included and appreciated throughout the whole day. My second-shooter Stephanie and I had so much fun getting to know the guests, the other vendors, and the grounds of this stunning historic villa.

Villa Catureglio, an estate constructed in the early 13th century, is nestled high in the hills above the walled city of Lucca, and provided a perfect base for Kailey and Alex’s wedding festivities. There were pools for their guests to laze around in, expansive olive-tree-lined grounds to explore, and wine, cheese, and other delicacies to savor. It was like a scene straight out of ‘Eat Pray Love’.

The wedding day was as perfect as could be—warm and sunny, but not too hot. Kailey got dressed beside large windows, with views overlooking the countryside and the grounds of the villa. Alex spent the morning with his closest friends, enjoying the sunshine and sipping off pre-ceremony jitters. Kailey’s grandmother had come all the way there for her first visit back to Italy since she had left the country as a young teenager, and this brave act of love meant so much to the family. The ceremony was so beautiful and meaningful, with the guests surrounding K + A with a blessed circle of individual white roses. The reception that evening went well into the night, under a thick blanket of stars and string lights. It couldn’t have been lovelier, and it was a wedding day I’ll never forget.
